I have had the honor of observing the teaching results of Julia Nielsen over several years. Her diagnostic abilities are absolutely exceptional, exemplifying depth of knowledge and problem-solving tools that move the singer toward vocal health. I would recommend Dr. Nielsen to any singer. She is the total package of a great teacher. Knowledge, diagnostics, and a positive approach to helping the singer move forward are reflected in her unique, caring approach.

While performing in a show with a singer I knew, I couldn't help but to hear how different, secure, and amazing she sounded. After a long talk with this singer, I realized that I really wanted to be in touch with her new teacher. I met Julia... I had been worried that there were vocal issues that I would never be able to fix about my voice. I never thought that, in one year, I would make an amazing transformation. Now, I feel hopeful that the voice I always dreamed I had, may actually be a reality.

I love to sing many different styles of music, therefore, sometimes it is hard for a teacher to guide me. It can be difficult to feel that I have to decide which music I want to focus on. However, when I started working with Julia, she instantaneously knew what I needed, and there were no compromises. In fact, her positive attitude helped me to follow the dream that excited me.

Because I had already had many years of vocal training I was worried that she wanted me to start from the beginning. But, with Julia, she took me from where I was and figured out what I needed to fix and expand on my training. Through her explanation of breath, I have never felt more secure singing at auditions and in performances. If there is something I don't understand, she will instantly find another way to clarify. In fact, I am inspired to ask questions, and I always receive upfront answers.

I had been worried that there were vocal issues that I would never be able to fix about my voice. Julia is able to explain clearly what I need to do. She always takes my words and comments and tailors the lesson to fit my needs each day. Without telling her, she was able to pinpoint the parts of my technique that needed work and tailor each vocal exercise to solve a different issue. During the week, I can really feel the progress. Since I live a busy lifestyle, she even helps me to figure out where, when, and how I can practice, so I can always find time.

Julia is such an insightful, positive, intelligent, no-nonsense person who really saw exactly who I wanted to be. You can tell that she loves to teach and gets so much joy from singing and seeing others singers succeed. I know that I can always be honest with her and I always get honest feedback from her.

I never thought that, in one year, I would make an amazing transformation that I was worried would never happen. Now, I feel hopeful that the voice I always dreamed I had, may actually be a reality. I have the ability to be a singer that can move between many different genres effortlessly, without giving anything up. Thank you, Julia!

Being an Information Technology professional, I’m accustomed to clear and concise direction when it comes to problem solving. Therefore, when I began vocal training later in life, age 30, I was not prepared for the vague and mystical teaching techniques I encountered from almost every teacher. The minefield of vocal teachers I had to navigate early on was an exercise in patience and frustration. Fortunately, for me and her many other students, I found Julia Nielsen.

Julia addresses each vocal issue in a systematic way, applying appropriate exercises and the goals behind them. This instruction is not only helpful in the lesson but can be practiced and repeated at home -- a must. She also keeps copious notes and remembers what was studied and accomplished from the previous lesson so no time is wasted. I’m no longer surprised when Julia states, “I was thinking about your last lesson and want to try this new exercise.” I cannot recommend Julia more highly. With Julia’s instruction, I have gone from an occasionally hired singer to a regularly employed opera professional.

After years of vocal study, I have finally found a teacher who can actually teach. Julia's no-nonsense approach is refreshing; she can quickly diagnose your trouble spots and find creative ways to re-train years of bad habits. With the help of her curiosity and supportive encouragement, my true voice is beginning to fully emerge...I'm even getting interested in practicing!

Julia is a godsend! Within just my first couple lessons with Julia, I felt a HUGE sense of relief that I had found a teacher who, through teaching a very healthy and clear technique, would help bring back an ease to my singing. I felt a freedom in my top range immediately and clarity in understanding proper breath support... How come I never learned this in grad school?!

Julia is a godsend! Before I found Julia I had been studying with a well-intentioned, respected teacher for several years and my singing was actually getting worse and worse over time. While I was repeatedly assured by this teacher that I was "just about to get it” (the technique), my hunches told me to look elsewhere and eventually I was led to Julia. Within just my first couple lessons with Julia, I felt a HUGE sense of relief that I had found a teacher who, through teaching a very healthy and clear technique, would help bring back an ease to my singing. I felt a freedom in my top range immediately and clarity in understanding proper breath support.

I did not anticipate, however, how much I would actually grow vocally with Julia over time. In the last two years I have been studying with Julia, my ranges have become easier to navigate and keep even; there is more strength in my middle and low voice, which were always "problem areas" with other teachers; I've learned how to drop weight from my top without going off my support (this is primarily through "cuperto" exercises that Julia teaches, accessing a long-time known function of the vocal cords that I knew nothing about); and...Oh, Hallelujah!...I've finally learned how to practice! This was something I was not doing properly. I'd practice for hours...wrongly, enforcing incorrect technique, but now Julia teaches me how to pace myself. How come I never learned this in grad school?!

Julia has GREAT ears. She hears even the slightest discrepancy of tone or resonance and never lets me get away with it. She has an arsenal of exercises to address specific technical problems and I am amazed when a new exercise is introduced to get at an issue. And they always do! Finally, Julia is as professional a teacher as they come. She is consistent, clear, organized, warm, and supportive. I am so grateful for Julia; I don't know what I would do without her!

I am so grateful to have found a mentor in the fabulous Julia Nielsen. Connecting to my body has been my biggest challenge in singing. I once had a teacher tell me in a college practicum that I was like "a singing head with no body". Julia is the first person to be able to skillfully guide me towards optimum use of my body to support my tone. She patiently led me through myriad techniques, taking the time to explain how the various actions aided breath management, and has always been willing to go back to the basics upon my request, or when she discerns that those skills are slipping.

I am the kind of singer that needs to understand the underlying mechanics of what I am doing, rather than feel the effects and recreate. So as I have asked lots of questions and re-articulated the knowledge in my own words, Julia never once made me feel stupid for asking or expressed impatience with my pace of learning. Rather, we have had wonderful discussions ranging from highly technical and physiological to esoteric and mystical.

Probably what I love most is that Julia holds a rock-solid positive vibration within herself as she teaches. I have been kind of a Negative Nancy towards myself and my singing. When I shared this, or some insecure facet of my thinking, she said, "Well, that's a habit, and habits can be changed." Yes!

If you are considering lessons with Julia, stop considering and just do it. Like one of her other students said to me as we passed each other on my first day: "You'll never go back."

—Anne Janzer, Soprano San Francisco Symphony Chorus

Julia has a deep understanding of what’s happening in the physiology of singing. Better yet, she combines that understanding with a wonderful ear, and with practical, effective exercises for improving technique and vocal production. Julia has helped me peel away bad habits that I thought were permanent barriers, and restored my voice and love of singing.
