Alexander Technique for Singers

Sensing that I was in drastic need for some deep conditioning work on my body, but not knowing where to turn, I stumbled upon Fumi Sasa’s website and immediately sought her out. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made, for she has helped to completely revamp my body, and as a result, the effect is showing up in my voice.
As an opera singer, my body is my instrument, and through her passion, expertise and unbridled joy in her work, she has helped me to rebuild my instrument to a more natural, poised, and free state. I cannot recommend her services enough.

Description: Fumi Sasa, a certified Alexander Technique teacher, will partner with Dr. Julia Nielsen to present a body alignment clinic for classical singers. During this two-hour event, singers will be introduced to the rudiments of the Alexander Technique as applied to a singer’s standing posture. In addition, the first eight participants to register will have their body alignment individually assessed by Fumi while being vocalized by Julia.
Why Alexander Technique?
A singer’s body alignment is the foundation of healthy vocal technique. Incorrect posture and/or tension in the knees, hips, shoulders, or neck can compromise a singers’ breathing and profoundly affect not only their sense of ease and comfort, but the quality of their sound. Yet many of these tensions and misalignments are so habitual that are rarely noticed unless the singer is in pain. The Alexander Technique is a 130-year old neuromuscular re-education method for identifying and letting go of these unwanted habits, allowing the singer to use the appropriate amount of muscular effort for singing.
